LATEST NEWS

June 29th - The Executioners had a tremendous start to the new 2008/09 season in the South West Championships. Will Ellison was runner-up in the singles, while Andy Pringle was one half of the runner-up pair in the Doubles.

June 23rd - No less than seven pairs took part in the traditional Executioners season-ending doubles tournament on Saturday June 21st, organised for the first time by Guy Matthews. After a hard day's Fives, the final was contested by the pairings of Will Ellison/Jon Peterson and Andy Pringle/Jim Gregory. In the end, Will's class told, and he and Jon took the title with an 11-9, 11-3 win.
As well as this title, Will won the club's Singles Ladder, unsurprisingly also earning him the club's Player of the Season trophy. At  the same time, Richard Bridge was awarded the Most Competitive Player award, while Charles Lamb went home with the award for the Most Improved Player - something he went on to prove beyond all doubt by winning the Ingram Cup at Merchant Taylors' School on the following day, carrying his partner Dan Grant through to a two-game victory over Richard Price and Peter Cohen.

May 7th - Two Executioners made the long journey to Loretto for the Scottish Open, and both came back with silverware. Charles Lamb (and partner Dave Hebden) were runners-up in the doubles championship, while Andy Pringle won the Plate singles.

April 30th - First, a date for your diaries: the club's now legendary end-of-season doubles tournament will be on Saturday June 21st, organised by Guy Matthews. If you haven't done so already, please let him know asap if you want to play.
Secondly, apologies for the relatively few updates so far this year. Blame my RFA commitments... Anyway, here's a round-up of our club members' exploits over the last few months:
National Under 25s - this tournament at last brought some silverware back to the Executioners, when Will Ellison (with Steve Korris) won the doubles title. He also reached the semis of the singles, only losing to the eventual champion.
RFA v BUSA - after his success in the above and the BUSA tournament, Will was selected to represent BUSA in the annual match against the RFA, who included Andy Pringle in their side. Both won their singles and had mixed fortunes in the doubles, but it was the RFA who eventually emerged as winners.
National Winchester Fives - Will and Andy made the long trek to Sedbergh to play in this. Andy (with partner Simon Maskell) had a tough draw, having to play the eventual champions in the first round and then losing to the eventual Plate winners in the Plate quarter-finals. Will (with Hal Mohammed) made it through to the Plate final after a narrow loss to the eventual runner-up in the main competition, only to finish - narrowly - as runners-up again.
National Doubles - as you can read below, Will and Marcus Bate qualified for the final rounds, where they met Andy Pringle (and partner Chris Jones), who qualified automatically as fourth seeds. In the quarter-final, Will and Marcus won in three games before losing to the eventual champions in the semis - albeit with  the distinction of being the first pair in many years to take a game off them. Andy won through to the Plate final, only to lose there for the second year running.
National Club Championship - after a resounding away win against the Bank of England, we qualified for the quarter-finals, where we faced the White Rose club. Again, we scored a resounding win, only losing one game in the whole match - and that was only when the outcome of the match was already beyond doubt. In the semis, we faced Manchester's Y Club, the defending champions. We were only narrowly behind after the singles and shared the doubles, but Manchester's first pair won their games by a more convincing margin, meaning they won by just 15 points. Little wonder they went on to a successful defence of their title.
National Vintage Championships - Fresh from his money-raising run for the new courts at Rugby School, Dick Warner completed a memorable souble at these championships, winning the Plate in both singles and (with Derby's Robert Grey) the doubles.
In other random news, it should be noted that we're gradually taking over the Fives world: Andy Pringle is now General Secretary of the RFA and sits with Alex Smith on the board, while Tom Maconie is the Jesters Rugby Fives representative.

January 17th - Apologies for the lack of news lately, but there's now so much we don't know where to start. But, for the first of several bits of good news, how about that we had a tournament winner: Jon Abecassis teamed up with Phil Atkinson to win the President's Cup. Meanwhile, Marcus Bate and Will Ellison also proved a fine doubles combination, winning the London Qualifying tournament to book their place in the Finals of the National Doubles tournament. Here, they look set to meet Andy Pringle (fourth seed, along with partner Chris Jones) in the quarter-finals. Will and Marcus also did well to reach the quarter-finals of the National Singles, while Tom Maconie made the last 16.
Finally, the draw has been published for the National Club Knockout, and the Executioners face a local derby against the Bank of England Club in Roehampton. We have to play the game by the end of March, so watch this space for details of how we do...
