LATEST NEWS

June 14th - We had a very impressive nine pairs in the end-of-season tournament, and after a day's frenetic competition, the winners were the pair of James Bristow and Toby Brook, the latter appearing in his first ever tournament final. Runners-up were Jez Sinton and Adam Tong, who pushed James and Toby all the way, only losing the third game in the best-of-three final 9-11. The plate was won by Shafin Somji and Riaz Dharahshi, who defeated the scratch pair of Alex Smith and Charles Lamb.
At the same time, the club's singles ladder drew to a close, with Tom Maconie deservedly retaining his number 1 spot, after successfully winning his last two challengers, James Bristow and Andy Pringle. At the club's prize-giving, in the Sun Inn, Barnes, the winners all received silverware, and we also presented awards to deserving club members - who will be named n this website just as soon as we've told them in person!

In the mean time, here's a video of the day's competition:

June 4th - There's little more than a week now till the club's end-of-season tournament on June 13th. This will be held at St Paul's, and will coincide with the end of the singles ladder - as well as being followed by a visit to Balham's best Indian restaurant, Qmin.

April 26th - The club's first team (led by Will Ellison and Marcus Bate, and supported by Andy Pringle and Chris Burrows) put up a fine show in the final rounds of the club championship, claiming possibly its best ever win in their quarter-final against the RFA Club. Facing a team that included the current top two ranked singles players in the game, as well as two former national singles champions, the Executioners emerged victorious by two points, 93 to 91. This set up a semi-final against the defending champions, Manchester's Y Club, and although the club lost, a superb performance from Will and Marcus ensured they scored more points against the Mancunians (who went on to successfully defend their title) than the eventual runners-up.

April 10th - The club's two teams had mixed fortunes in the Preliminary Round of the Club Championship. Although the second four (captain Guy Matthews, plus Riaz Dharamshi, Charles Lamb and Shafin Somji) lost in an away fixture at Derby Moor, the first four (Andy Pringle, Will Ellison, Tom Maconie and Marcus Bate) scored a fine win over the Wessex Club at St Paul's. Their next opponents - in the Quarter-finals - will be the RFA Club, captained by National Number 2 Ed Fuller.

April 2nd - The club did well in the final rounds of the National Doubles Championship, with two pairs reaching the quarter-finals. Andy Pringle and Tom Maconie lost to the eventual champions in the quarter-final, but reached the Plate final, where they lost in three games. However, the best performance came from Will Ellison and Marcus Bate, who beat the second seeds to reach the final. Here they played extremely well again, but lost out to the defending champions, who took the title for a sixth consecutive time.

March 18th - The club is delighted to report that it now has a National Open champion in its ranks after Will Ellison (with Hal Mohammed) won the National Winchester Fives doubles championship, held at Malvern College. In the same tournament, Andy Pringle and Jez Sinton reached the final of the plate, but lost out in a tight three-gamer. For Will, it's just the latest success in a very successful season, coming off the back of strong performances in the North of England Open and the Under 25s, where he was runner-up in the singles and retained his doubles title with Steve Korris.

January 9th - The singles ladder has now been drawn - rather later than intended(!). Dick Warner starts the season top of the pile, with previous winner Tom Maconie not far behind in third. However, reigning champion Will Ellison will have some hard work ahead, starting in 16th position.

December 9th - The Executioners have had a good run of success lately, crowned – again – by victory in the President's Cup. We're delighted to report that the Cup was won by KCS schoolboy Jay Gravatt, who guided national doubles champion Hamish Buchanan to the title. The club also had players in all three plate finals: Chris Burrows beat Jonno Abecassis and won the T-Pot, but sadly Will Ellison, Adam Tong and Andy Pringle lost in their finals.
This strong showing comes on the back of a good last couple of months: for the second year running, Will, Marcus Bate and Tom Maconie qualified for the last 16 of the National Singles, with Will going on to reach the quarter-finals and Tom finishing as runner-up in the Plate. Will also did well in the BUCS Student championships, finishing as runner-up in both the singles and doubles, while Shafin Somji was runner-up in the Plate singles.
The club also had a good showing in Sherborne at the West of England Championships, with two players in the doubles final: Marcus (with James Toop) beat Will (partnered by Hal Mohammed), while Tom Maconie won the Doubles plate. Will also reached the quarter-finals of the singles.

September 7th - The Executioners put up a mixed showing the London Open. Although several players failed to register a point while losing in the first round of the singles, sixth seed Will Ellison reached the quarter-finals. He then teamed up with Marcus Bate in the doubles, and played superbly to reach the final, where they lost to the defending champions (who had already disposed of Andy Pringle – partnering Chris Jones – in the semi-final).
